Ivan Schranz's early goal proves enough for shock victory
Slovakia delivered the first major shock result of Euro 2024 snatching an early goal and defending furiously to hold on for a 1-0 victory over Belgium.
Schranz's moment of magic
The match had barely got going when Slovakia took the lead. Ivan Schranz picked up the ball on the left wing and cut inside before unleashing a right-footed shot from a difficult angle. The ball flew into the top corner of the net giving Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois no chance.
Belgium's frustration
Belgium dominated possession for the rest of the match but could not find a way past a resolute Slovakia defence. Romelu Lukaku had a number of chances to equalize but was unable to beat Martin Dubravka in the Slovakia goal.
Slovakia hold on
Slovakia defended heroically in the closing stages with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka making a number of fine saves. Belgium threw everything forward in search of an equalizer but were unable to break down the Slovakia defence.
