WEB Mai: German Overshoot Day 2023
Earth's Resources Depleted Earlier Than Ever Before
Germany's Overshoot Day a Warning Sign for the World
This year's German Overshoot Day falls on May 5th, a stark reminder of our collective impact on the planet. If everyone on Earth lived like Germans, we would have exhausted our planet's resources for the year by this date.
Like the rest of the world, Germany is largely unprepared to handle the consequences of our unsustainable resource consumption. Earth Overshoot Day, which marks the date when humanity has used up all the resources that Earth can regenerate in a year, has moved up significantly since its first calculation in the early 1970s. In 2022, it fell on August 28th. Just one year later, it has shifted to August 2nd, 2023.
The Earth Overshoot Day is a wake-up call for both individuals and policymakers. Despite the availability of knowledge and solutions, we continue to overexploit our planet's finite resources. It is imperative that we take collective action to reduce our ecological footprint and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
