Tsunami Warning Issued After Strong Earthquake Hits Northeastern Japan

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has struck northeastern Japan, causing widespread damage and panic. The quake hit at around 9:06 pm local time (12:06 pm GMT) and was centered in the Fukushima prefecture, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

The quake caused strong shaking in Tokyo and other major cities in the region. Buildings swayed and power lines were downed, leaving thousands of homes without electricity. There are reports of collapsed buildings and infrastructure damage, including bridges and roads.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan. Tsunami waves of up to one meter (3.3 feet) are expected to hit the coast within the next hour. Residents in low-lying areas have been urged to evacuate immediately.
