Nerlens Noel was born on April 10, 1994, and was raised in Everett, Massachusetts. He attended Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire, where he was a standout basketball player. Noel committed to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky, but chose to forgo his college eligibility and declare for the 2013 NBA Draft.

Noel was selected with the sixth overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans). He spent his first four seasons with the Pelicans before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2017. After a brief stint with the Mavericks, Noel signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2018.
