WASHINGTON, D.C. - September 26, 2023 - A top U.S. senator will face trial on charges that he accepted bribes, including gold bars and a Mercedes, in exchange for political favors, the Department of Justice announced today. The trial of Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) is scheduled to begin on March 21, 2024. Menendez, who has denied the charges, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The indictment alleges that Menendez accepted bribes from Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor.
